The use of herbicide sprays is by and large a topical approach , designed to defoliate the plant’s ability to collect energy. The sprays turn the foliage brown, but leave the root core, protected by the soil medium to resprout and send new growth toward the light, thus the continuous cycle of treating the same weeds. The first few pictures below demonstrate this with a Nut Sedge example. Each arrow is a point where the plant can resprout from.
